One of the main reasons I chose to study at DIS was because of the excellent public health program offered. I had hopes that coming to Copenhagen, a main international center for Public Health, would confirm that Public Health Studies was the right major for me. My core course, Health Delivery and Prioritization in Northern Europe, has been the one class that reassured me of this decision. I have learned a lot about Public Health in the class lectures, in the readings, and during the short and long study tours. The topics we discussed during the semester were thought provoking and I found them to be interesting – topics I would want to continue my education learning about. On top of being able to visit Latvia and Finland and experiencing their healthcare systems, my eyes were opened to the varying organizational and operational structures of the healthcare systems in different countries. Before coming to Denmark, I had never thought about the different health care systems that exist around the world, and was just familiar with the system in the US. The vast amount of research that can be done with the register-based system where all Denmark citizens are given a CPR number is incredible. Thinking of the future, I realized how having access to the Danish registers for research purposes would be beneficial for me in graduate school research.

Copenhagen is an incredibly beautiful city. Once you get the hang of it, it is a very manageable place to live and study. DIS is located in the heart of the city center so it is very central to restaurants, cafes, study areas, and bars. I loved attending class every day and then leaving after to explore the local neighborhoods. Nyhavn, Norrebro, and Vesterbro are a few of the many neighborhoods that have unique qualities. The Danes speaks English very well so it was very easy to navigate directions and ordering food. I miss walking along the cobblestone streets and eating the yummy pastries from the numerous bakeries. Copenhagen is a place where I enjoyed myself the most. I will definitely make my way back to the city because I had the time of my life there.

I lived in a folkehøjskole while in Denmark, so I was able to live with students from all over the world, completely opening up my biews of different countries and helping break stereotypes that I have been surrounded by.

Personal growth is probably what I have gained most. Being abroad really forces you out of your comfort zone and morphs you into an adult. Having to grocery shop every few days, cooking for myself and trying new recipes, living on my own in a city, figuring out public transportation in Denmark and other countries, and much more have broadened my eyes to the world. When something doesn't go according to plan, being able to handle the situation smoothly and under control is also a maturing experience. When I was traveling from Seville to Paris, I had a problem with the departure time of my flight because it had been switched, so when I arrived to the airport it had taken off hours prior. Upon hearing this, I started having an internal panic attack and had to calm myself down and figure out what to do. I ended up having to buy a plane ticket on another airline leaving in a few hours, so it worked out in the end and made me more assertive in attacking issues head on. Most importantly, being abroad has made me more confident. I am confident in my abilities to find my way around a new city, to try new recipes, to be the first to talk to someone and make new friends, and to order a coffee in Danish. I have realized that living in a city is so convenient and easy because everything is close by, public transportation is impeccable, and the atmosphere is lively and welcoming. From my semester experience, I have come to the conclusion that I would like to settle in a city. I would love to be able to go to graduate school somewhere in Europe to explore another area and another city.

Why Study Abroad
Program Testimonials
It is one thing to be on campus learning about how to be a global citizen, but to actually see what lies outside Elon and the US is unmatched. The world is incredible and if you're given the opportunity to immerse yourself in it, it would be a mistake not to take it.
