Study abroad has widened my expectations and experiences of the world, helping me to narrow my goals while simultaneously enabling me to pinpoint the things in my life that are important.

How has your experience changed or clarified your aspirations for life?
Program Testimonials
I have wanted to go into theatre education for a while now, and being at Elon has challenged this dream in a lot of ways. The trip to India really made me realize that theatre education is my true calling, even though the course itself had nothing to do with theatre. Being in the schools made me realize how much I love teaching, and I got to visit a Kathakali training center and see students of all ages following their passion for the performing arts. These experiences helped me solidify my professional goals for the future, and it was an inspiring and eye-opening experience.

What was a unique aspect of this program, and how did this affect you or your experience?
Program Testimonials
Studying abroad anywhere is an incredible experience, but this program was unique because of the service component that was included. Even if I were to travel to India on my own, I would most likely not get to visit the cities that we went to, and I definitely would not be able to have the experiences that we had in the schools. We got to meet students of all ages and interact with them on a very personal level. Some of my favorite moments on the trip occurred during our traveling science museum. At one school in particular, we spent two days there and formed some very strong bonds and had several very powerful conversations with students close to our own age. We also got to interact with deaf and hard of hearing college students at the National Institute of Speech and Hearing, which was such a cool experience that has changed my perspective of deaf culture in the United States as well. These three weeks felt less like a touristy trip or vacation and more like a true cultural exchange, which was incredible, and I do not believe this would have happened without the service component.

How has your experience affected you personally?
Program Testimonials
I learned that I am capable of more than I ever thought I could be. This trip taught me to be more independent and to stand up for myself and take control of the situation to make the experience what I want it to be instead of just going along with what the group wants. I also learned to be more open and friendly with strangers. I had so many incredible conversations because I decided to open up and approach members of the local community.

Why Study Abroad
Program Testimonials
This was an unmatched experience to get to truly focus in on an aspect of Indian culture, and not just the whole country but a specific state. The level of familiarity you gain with the country and the region in only three weeks is unparalleled. It broadens your understanding and concept of the world in general, but also connects you as a student and a person to some amazing places and people that you would never meet or see any other way. My experience in India has been life changing, but more than that it has helped to define me as a student and helped me set some post-graduate goals. I could not recommend this experience to anyone else more- if given the chance I think every student should take this opportunity.
