About the Location

Jordan is located in the heart of the Middle East, bordering Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the West Bank.  Jordan is home to some 6.4 million people.  The capital city of Amman has a history that dates back at least 5,000 years.  Draped over several hills, Amman is a study in contrasts.  A traditional downtown souk (marketplace) is a taxi ride away from massive, American-style shopping malls.  It is a very accessible, cosmopolitan city with numerous museums, art galleries, theaters, and cinemas.  With its reputation for security and hospitality, Amman is home to inhabitants from all over the Middle East.

Founded in 1962, the University of Jordan is the oldest public four-year institution of higher education in Jordan. The University has 13 academic faculties, 65 academic departments, and a diverse student body of nearly 35,000, including 1,800 international students. The CIEE Study Center is located opposite the main gate of the University and offers students a wide range of support, library, and advising services. Participants in the Summer Arabic Language study abroad program also have access to the CIEE on-campus office in the University of Jordan’s Language Center. CIEE students have access to all major campus facilities, including the library and computer labs.

The summer Arabic Language study abroad program in Amman, Jordan is for students who have a strong interest in developing a solid foundation in Modern Standard Arabic and seek to begin or accelerate their language proficiency through an intensive language program. In addition to rigorous coursework in Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Jordanian Arabic, students work with Peer Language Tutors and participate in language club activities and program excursions designed to give them opportunities to apply their language skills and learn firsthand about Jordanian culture and society.   The academic program is supplemented with excursions to Jordan’s archaeological, historical, and natural wonders. The study abroad program will include a day trip to one of Jordan’s well know historical sites, such as the Byzantine era churches in Madaba and a day-long community service activity in a rural part of the country. The program will also include one overnight trip to Petra.

  • Grades count toward an Elon GPA.
  • Study abroad courses may not be taken on an audit or pass/fail basis, regardless of the host institution's policy.
  • View course listings for this program.
  • A list of courses to be used as a guide for Elon course equivalents from this program is available in the GEC in Global Commons 360.

General Program Dates

Early June - late July (seven weeks)

Costs for study abroad vary program to program and will not be exactly the same as on-campus costs of attendance at Elon.

For cost information for this program, please see the summer budget sheet.

Scholarships/Travel Grants

GEC Access Scholarships are designed to help provide access for all undergraduate students to participate in an Elon-approved Global Engagement (study abroad or Study USA) program.  The application for a GEC Access Scholarship is a questionnaire embedded in the outgoing program application--there is no external application.  Please see the GEC Access Scholarship brochure for information on eligibility, conditions, and notification.

For additional information on scholarships or other funding for global engagement, see the Financial Planning for Global Study page.

Students can apply for summer financial aid through Elon University in person in the Office of Financial Planning in the spring semester.  Summer financial aid applications are due May 1.

If you qualify for a travel grant through any of the fellows or scholars programs, see the appropriate program director for more information on how to apply the grant to your global engagement program.  Visit the Deadlines and Events Calendar for travel grant deadlines.

CIEE offers scholarships to students studying abroad on CIEE programs.  Information is available on the CIEE website.

Students who are interested in this summer program in conjunction with a semester in Amman may be eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship

Participants live with other CIEE students in local apartments. Students need to budget for all meals as they are not included in the program fee. However, lunch is provided for students during orientation and CIEE sponsored excursions. Students receive a stipend to be used for transportation to and from campus. CIEE housing in Jordan requires students to make adjustments to the host culture, including curfews, limits on guests, and decorum. Apartments have limits on visitors and quiet hours for safety purposes and deference to local norms.  For students with an interest in living with a Jordanian family and willing to adjust to limits on socializing after hour, there are a limited number of shared, summer homestays available.

Students must complete the online Elon University study abroad application by the published deadline.  See the Deadline and Events Calendar for the most up-to-date deadline information.

Initial approval is granted by Elon, and final acceptance is granted by CIEE.

A successful semester and summer abroad is dependent upon adequate preparation.  Students will participate in a series of mandatory orientations during the semester prior to studying abroad.  These orientations will address issues of academic, cultural, logistical, financial, and personal preparation, as well as health and safety.  Failure to participate in the required orientations will result in dismissal from the program.  Any financial losses incurred by this dismissal, including program fees and international airfare, are the student's full responsibility.
