About the Location

Oxford, located in the center of England, is an internationally recognized intellectual center and lively cultural hub. From museums, parks, and art galleries to shopping, restaurants, and theaters, Oxford has much to offer.  Home to more than 150,000 people, the city of Oxford boasts a student population of more the 30,000. Students can conveniently escape to the picturesque countryside surrounding the city by bus or bicycle.  St. Clare's is just minutes away from the city center and within easy access by bus or train to places of interest such as London, Bath, and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Academics

Founded in 1953, St. Clare's, Oxford is an independent international college that draws students from around the world who wish to supplement their studies with a semester or full year of liberal arts courses and education courses in England.

The Liberal Arts Program features small seminar courses of 3-12 students in addition to specialized one-on-one tutorials. Courses may be selected from a wide range of academic subjects. Elon students typically earn 4 semester hours of credit per course and are advised to select a total of 5 courses: 4 seminar courses and 1 tutorial class.  Students can opt to enroll in the thematic, interdisciplinary St. Clare's Seminar Series as one of their seminar courses.

The Education Studies Program at St. Clare's is designed for education majors to earn credit toward their degree while studying abroad. Students enrolled in this program will select from a list of education courses with additional elective options from the Liberal Arts program seminar/tutorial courses and the St. Clare's Seminar Series. Students in the Education Studies program will be assigned a placement as a classroom assistant at a local primary or secondary school for one full day per week.  Education Studies students also have access to the library at the University of Oxford Department of Education.

  • Grades count toward an Elon GPA.
  • Study abroad courses may not be taken on an audit or pass/fail basis, regardless of the host institution's policy.

Housing

Students studying at St. Clare's, Oxford can choose to live in a homestay with local hosts or in one of St. Clare's residences with other US and international students.  St. Clare's carefully selects and visits all homestay hosts.  Students living in a homestay typically have a single room and breakfast and dinner are provided at the home.  Students living in a St. Clare's residence will have access to a kitchen to prepare meals.  In addition to the many options to eat out around Oxford, St. Clare's has a dining hall at its main building where students can purchase lunch.  Sheets, duvets, and towels are provided as well as access to laundry facilities.  Most housing is within 15 minutes from St. Clare's on foot or by bus.  Residence halls close for two weeks during the Easter break in spring semester.

More information on housing options and meals can be found here.

Applications

Students must complete the online Elon University study abroad application by the published deadline.  See the Deadline and Events Calendar for the most up-to-date deadline information.  Applications are generally accepted one semester in advance.

Initial approval is granted by Elon, and final acceptance is granted by St. Clare's, Oxford.

Orientations

A successful semester abroad is dependent upon adequate preparation.  Students will participate in a series of mandatory orientations during the semester prior to studying abroad.  These orientations will address issues of academic, cultural, logistical, financial, and personal preparation, as well as health and safety.  Failure to participate in the required orientations will result in dismissal from the program.  Any financial losses incurred by this dismissal, including program fees and international airfare, are the student's full responsibility.
