About the Location

Cambodia is located on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. This emerging post-conflict nation is home to more than 15 million people. The political, economic, and cultural center of the country is found in the capital and largest city of Phnom Penh. The primary housing site of this program is in Siem Reap, a bustling city that serves as the gateway to the Angkor temple complex.

Academics

Students in the program complete a total of 18 credits consisting of four, 4-credit courses (Environmental Ethics and Development, Conservation Science and Practice, Ecosystems and Livelihoods, and Directed Research) and one, 2-credit course (Language and Culture of Cambodia).

Students in this program learn about the complexity and fundamental importance of the Mekong River to the region’s ecosystems, livelihoods, and development. Through coursework, field excursions, and Directed Research, students focus on conservation, environmental ethics, and rural development.

General Program Dates

Fall semester – Early September  to Mid-December

Spring semester – Early February to Mid-May

Cost

Costs for study abroad vary program to program and will not be exactly the same as on-campus costs of attendance at Elon.

Full cost information for this program will be available on the budget sheet soon.

Scholarships/Travel Grants

Need-based scholarships are available for Elon semester programs through the GEC. For additional information on scholarships or other funding for study abroad, see the Funding for Study Abroad page.

If you qualify for a travel grant through any of the fellows or scholars programs, see the appropriate program director for more information on how to apply the grant to your study abroad program. Visit the Deadlines and Events Calendar for travel grant deadlines.

Housing

The main housing site for this program is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Here, students are lodged with SFS staff in a local guesthouse that includes shared bedrooms and bathrooms (with running water), wireless internet, and a common area for studying, dining, and relaxing. There is a washing machine on site, but no dryer.

The group will stay in hotels and other guesthouses during other travel around Cambodia.

Applications

Students must complete the online Elon University study abroad application by the published deadline. See the Deadline and Events Calendar for the most up-to-date deadline information. Applications are generally accepted one semester in advance.

Initial approval is granted by Elon, and final acceptance is granted by the host institution.

Orientations

A successful semester abroad is dependent upon adequate preparation.  Students will participate in a series of mandatory orientations during the semester prior to studying abroad.  These orientations will address issues of academic, cultural, logistical, financial, and personal preparation, as well as health and safety.  Failure to participate in the required orientations will result in dismissal from the program.  Any financial losses incurred by this dismissal, including program fees and international airfare, are the student's full responsibility.

Visit the Orientations for Study Abroad Programs page for the semester program's pre-departure orientation schedule.
