About the Location

Boasting a population of nearly 600,000, Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland. A thriving shipbuilding port during the Industrial Revolution, Glasgow emerged as the home to many premier Scottish arts organizations.  The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the National Theatre of Scotland, the Scottish Ballet, SSE Hydro, and countless other arts organizations and live music venues all play into a vibrant festival scene spanning the entire year. With ten institutions of higher education, Glasgow is home to a significant student population.

Academics

Located in the bohemian West End district, University of Glasgow is the second-oldest university in Scotland and enrolls more than 25,000 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. University of Glasgow is one of the top-ranked institutions of higher education in the United Kingdom. Students have access to classes with world-class scholars across the disciplines. University of Glasgow enjoys a particularly strong reputation in Biology, English, and History. Students in business can take courses at the AACSB-accredited Adam Smith Business School, named after the "father of modern economics" who studied and taught at the University of Glasgow.

The semester study abroad program at the University of Glasgow is in affiliation with The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University. In addition to assisting students with their integration into the Scottish university environment, Arcadia resident staff provide a comprehensive on-site orientation and organize numerous cultural and social activities which help students learn beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to pursue a Co-curricular Learning Certificate as a means of structuring and reflecting upon their out-of-class experiences. Many of the semester's activities will be part of the theme for the annual Life of the Mind Series

Academic Notes

  • Grades count toward an Elon GPA.
  • Study abroad courses may not be taken on an audit or pass/fail basis, regardless of the host institution's policy.

Scholarships/Travel Grants

GEC Access Scholarships are designed to help provide access for all undergraduate students to participate in an Elon-approved Global Engagement (study abroad or Study USA program). The application for a GEC Access Scholarship is a questionnaire embedded in the outgoing program application--there is no external application. Please see the GEC Access Scholarship brochure for information on eligibility, conditions, and notification.

For additional information on scholarships or other funding for global engagement, see the Financial Planning for Global Study page.

If you qualify for a travel grant through any of the fellows or scholars programs, see the appropriate program director for more information on how to apply the grant to your study abroad program.

Visit the Deadlines and Events Calendar for travel grant deadlines.

Arcadia offers scholarships to students studying abroad on Arcadia programs. Information is available on the Arcadia website.

Housing

Students live in one of the University's halls of residence. All students receive sheets, duvet (comforter), a pillow and pillowcase but they must supply their own towels. Launderettes are available for student use. Most students live in the University's self-catered residences which are spread throughout Glasgow, on average, a 20-minute walk or short bus ride to campus. These residences range from traditional residence halls to shared flats. Students live in a single or double bedroom and prepare their own meals in communal kitchens. Residents supply their own cookware and cutlery, which can be purchased inexpensively in Glasgow upon arrival.  Meals can also be purchased from various eateries on campus. Further information about housing is available on the Arcadia program website.

As part of the Arcadia orientation program in Scotland, students will spend a few days living with a Scottish host family.

Applications

Students must complete the online Elon University study abroad application by the published deadline. View the Deadline and Events Calendar for the most up-to-date deadline information. Applications are generally accepted one semester in advance.

Initial approval is granted by Elon, and final acceptance is granted by Arcadia.

Orientations

A successful semester abroad is dependent upon adequate preparation. Students will participate in a series of mandatory orientations during the semester prior to studying abroad. These orientations will address issues of academic, cultural, logistical, financial, and personal preparation, as well as health and safety. Failure to participate in the required orientations will result in dismissal from the program. Any financial losses incurred by this dismissal, including program fees and international airfare, are the student's full responsibility.

View the pre-departure orientation schedule for the semester programs.
