DPT Romania DPT Romania 2

Program Description

In collaboration with Joni and Friends Wheels for the World, Elon DPT students and Dr. Bill Andrews provide wheelchairs for individuals who do not have access to wheeled mobility. Under the direct supervision of American physical and occupational therapists, students partner with local churches for wheelchair seating and distribution in cities in Romania. 

Available for DPT 805 Clinical Internship; occurs over a 2-week period at the end of July and the beginning of August.

Service/volunteer opportunities
Students will spend 5-6 days distributing wheelchairs.


About the Location

Students will explore temporary distribution sites in Brasov and Lasa, Romania.

Transportation
All transportation needs are taken care of by in-country partners.

Cost

Costs for study away vary program to program and will not be exactly the same as on-campus costs of attendance at Elon. For this program, approximately $3340 covers all expenses, including airfare and housing.

Insurance

Liability coverage
Under the current University liability insurance policy, students will be covered by University liability insurance when participating in an approved GLO program. 

Housing

Students and other team members will stay in hotels.

Requirements

  • Students must complete the online application and pre-departure and post-departure learning modules by the published deadline.
  • Students must remain in good academic and professional standing to qualify for participation.
  • Students on academic or professional probation are not permitted to participate. 
  • Students are required to blog from their location as part of their course related requirements. 
  • All GLO students are required to present their experiences at the School of Health Sciences Annual GLO Fest.

Orientation

Prior to applying, all candidates are expected to meet with the program leader.
