About the Location

Australia, the sixth largest country in the world in land area, has a population of slightly over 20 million people. Sydney is located on Australia’s East Coast and is the most populous city in the country. Millions of tourists come each year to see the city famous for its natural features as well as man-made marvels like the Sydney Opera House. Sydney ranks second on a list of the 50 best cities in the world in which to live, work, and study.

The University of Sydney is one of Australia’s best universities with a stunning campus located in the heart of the city. It is Australia’s first university and regarded as one of the leading universities in the world. The University of Sydney’s campus is ranked within the 10 most beautiful campuses on the planet.

Academics

The University of Sydney has over 60,000 students and offers a variety of courses for study abroad students including courses in business, finance, marketing, and liberal arts. Remember that the Australian academic year follows the calendar year, and students will want to verify that courses are available the semester they plan to study abroad. Most students enroll in four courses for the semester. To see what classes are offered check University of Sydney Units of Study.

Students can also participate in an internship that complements their studies abroad. An internship at the University of Sydney helps facilitate the process for students to enter their chosen profession as well as develop global connections and be familiar with the Australian workplace. Internships are unpaid. Students receive credit and are expected to intern for a minimum of 160 hours over the course of the semester. Students participating in internships will also enroll in three additional courses. Internship placements are not guaranteed.

Elon students wishing to study at the University of Sydney must have cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and at least 1 year of university study completed.

  • Semester 1: March to June
  • Semester 2: July to November
A spring friendly option is available for business students, running January – June.

Points to note about taking courses abroad:

To ease students’ transitions to Sydney life and to foster an international culture, students are encouraged to join the Mates Abroad mentoring program. Students will be paired with Australian student mentors who can be a resource for travel around Sydney, as well as providing a support network for students who are abroad.

General Program Dates

Fall program –July to November
Spring semester –March to June

Cost

Costs for study abroad vary program to program and will not be exactly the same as on-campus costs of attendance at Elon.

For cost information for this program, please see the budget sheets (coming soon!).

Scholarships/Travel Grants

Need-based scholarships are available for Elon semester programs through the GEC.  For additional information on scholarships or other funding, see the Funding for Study Abroad page.

If you qualify for a travel grant through any of the fellows or scholars programs, see the appropriate program director for more information on how to apply the grant to your study abroad program.  Visit the Deadlines and Events Calendar for travel grant deadlines.

Housing

Students are provided guaranteed accommodations at either Queen Mary Building (QMB) or Urbanest provided that applications are completed by the advertised deadline. Rooms are fully furnished, and each accommodation provides a gym, communal areas, and 24/7 support staff for students. Social activities are often organized throughout the semester.

Applications

Students must complete the online Elon University study abroad application by the published deadline. See the Deadline and Events Calendar for the most up-to-date deadline information. Applications are generally accepted one semester in advance.

Initial approval is granted by Elon, and final acceptance is granted by The University of Sydney.

Orientations

A successful semester abroad is dependent upon adequate preparation. Students will participate in a series of mandatory orientations during the semester prior to studying abroad. These orientations will address issues of academic, cultural, logistical, financial, and personal preparation, as well as health and safety. Failure to participate in the required orientations will result in dismissal from the program. Any financial losses incurred by this dismissal, including program fees and international airfare, are the student's full responsibility.

View the pre-departure orientation schedule for semester programs.
